Why I built the Booth Handshake

“That plate booked a corporate event. A plus-one at a wedding found my Instagram handle on it.”
On New Year’s Eve, I was DJing at a local bar when a guest asked for my business card. She was getting married. She had just watched me play, liked what she saw, and went out of her way to ask for my contact. As I handed her the card, I knew she would never call.
I had a drawer full of other people’s cards. I never looked at them again. Business cards do a bad job at the one thing they are supposed to do.
A few years earlier, I worked with a DJ who ran a much bigger company. He built massive truss setups and stretched a banner wider than he was tall, and people knew his name. I wondered how I could get the same result without a truss rig that wouldn’t fit in my vehicle. At the time, my setup looked like I forgot my name on my homework. I needed something small that fit the rigs DJs actually use.
The first version was rough. Smaller, less striking, and not very good. Some DJs saw no change in their calendars. I was one of them. I started to doubt the whole idea. Then I brought the old hardware to my last wedding of the summer. I did not see anyone interact with it. A few days later, a plus-one of a distant family member messaged me on Instagram about a corporate event. She was not close to the bride. The only place she could have found my handle was the plate.
That plate booked a corporate event. That client still books me every year.
We have rebuilt the Club XL several times since then, using feedback from working DJs and the constraints of real booths. It is for DJs who are on display and want to turn that attention into a relationship. A bar, a wedding, a corporate event, a livestream.
